For the past 12 years I have taught A-Level English Literature, including several years as a sixth-form English teacher. My main areas are poetry, Shakespeare and comparative writing. I tend to be fairly methodical with exam preparation: we look closely at the assessment objectives, practise planning under time pressure and review essays line by line. I also help students who need to make their writing more concise and academically precise.

I started tutoring English while completing my literature degree and have carried on ever since. Six years later, I mainly teach A-Level students online. I’m a big fan of Gothic fiction, so lessons on texts such as Frankenstein are always favourites, but I’m just as happy working through unseen poetry. I don’t give students a ready-made interpretation; I’d much rather ask questions, test their reading and help them find evidence for their own argument.

I have eight years’ experience teaching A-Level English Literature and previously worked as an English teacher and Head of Key Stage 5. My tutoring is particularly useful for students aiming to improve essay structure and textual analysis. I use past questions regularly and give detailed feedback on written work, including introductions and individual paragraphs. Renaissance drama is my specialist interest, although I teach poetry and prose extensively as well.
